Oh Say Can You See?

The other day, president Bush said that the National Anthem should only be sung in English. He must have flip-flopped, I mean had a change of heart since the 2000 campaign. Singing the National Anthem in other languages is not a new thing. In fact, the State Department has the lyrics to the National Anthem on their website, in Spanish.

Why not translate the National Anthem into other languages? Isn’t this administration’s goal to spread Democracy through-out the World? The National Anthem of the United States is a very proud and inspiring song. For someone outside of the United States to hear, “The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave” in their native tongue should speak volumes of what it’s like to be an American and to want that for them.

What about our territories? English is not the native language of places like Puerto Rico, Guam, and American Samoa.

The real question is, when will the American people get tired of more of the same from the Republicans who hide behind these false issues (such as a national language and flag burning) and cry patriotism?
