North Korea announced on Monday that it had successfully conducted its second nuclear test, defying international warnings and dramatically raising the stakes in a global effort to persuade the recalcitrant Communist state to give up its weapons program.I still don't think Kim Jong-Il is stupid or crazy enough to actually lob one (or several) of these babies at us, or Japan or South Korea for that matter. Still, like it says above, this gives them significant leverage over us.
If the North’s latest test was more successful, it could mean that North Korea has bolstered its atomic weapons capabilities — and its leverage over the United States, which has sought to denuclearize the North.
(To be clear, I'm not saying we should have gone to war with North Korea. I just think we should have spent more time concentrating on how to diffuse the nuclear threat that they posed, instead of going to war with a country that didn't have the bomb or any effective nuclear program in general.)
I'm hoping that this missile is a version of the Taepodong model. It's much less dangerous than the Long Fat Dick neutron explosive.

Another example of the utter incompetence of the W administration. The worrisome thing about North Korea is that they border China.
Any state which would sell a nuke to a terrorist organization knows that, if the nuke could be traced back to them, they would risk annihilation by the injured state. In NK's case, they border a state which may object to nukes being used right next to them.
NK knows this, and it enters into their calculations in deciding what to do with the nukes they've created. Any threats by the USA, Russia or another injured party should a NK nuke be used in an attack could escalate into a nuclear confrontation with China.
The good news is that China knows this, too, so they have an incentive in avoiding such a confrontation by monitoring their border for shipments of nukes. I hope both we, SK and China are monitoring other borders, both land and sea, for nukes leaving NK.
And, in the spirit of Drew wanting more civiized discussion here, I'll refrain from the strong language I would use against the Republican party and the W administration which so endangered the country with their wrong-headed and reckless policies.
I'll just note that the biggest foreign policy coup of the latter 20th Century, the ending of the Cold War, happened when Ronald Reagan ignored the ravings of both Don Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney.
Wrong then. Wrong from 2001-2009. Wrong now. He's still a Dick, any way you look at it.
