19,000 dead-enders

In June 2003, Donald Rumsfeld famously declared,
"In those regions where pockets of dead-enders are trying to reconstitute, Gen. (Tommy) Franks and his team are rooting them out," Rumsfeld said, referring to the U.S. commander in Iraq. "In short, the coalition is making good progress."
Only, it turns out, Rumsfeld was, like the rest of the administration, talking out of his neo-con ass. Some 19,000 militants have been killed since the insurgency began. This according to the military's statistics.

Pockets of dead-enders indeed.
