The starting whistle

When I saw this article about Mark Mallory not wanting to fire a pistol to start a local 5K race because of the gun's symbolism, the first thing that came to my mind was a line from George Carlin, which he delivered after school systems were banning the use of the Super Soaker squirt guns:
"...so to make things safer, they're banning the toy guns...AND THEY'RE GONNA KEEP THE FUCKING REAL ONES!!!"
The symbolic gesture from the mayor is nice. What that actually ends up doing to reduce crime in the city is another story. Personally, I'd sooner see actual programs implemented to reduce crime, rather than the mayor blowing a whistle rather as opposed to shooting off a cap gun.
